The Deputy Head of Academic Development will support the Associate Head of Academic Learning Programmes in delivering the Certificate in International Learning and Teaching, the Experiential Route to Fellowship and other academic development initiatives. The postholder will model effective and inclusive teaching practices, demonstrating a deep understanding of pedagogy and classroom practice. This expertise will be used to support the professional growth of academic staff and help foster a culture of teaching excellence at Study Group.

- The postholder will play a key role in the successful launch of the Certificate, co-delivering workshops, contributing to the development of high-quality learning resources, providing constructive formative feedback to participants, responding to stakeholder input to inform ongoing improvements, and supporting the programme’s scalability throughout its pilot year.
- For the Experiential Route to Fellowship, the postholder will focus on sustaining high success rate of applicants, while supporting the continued growth in the number of staff achieving HEA Fellowship. This will be achieved through the delivery of a structured programme of online resources and workshops, establishing peer support groups and by coordinating monthly internal reviews.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Certificate in International Learning and Teaching
- Design and co-deliver engaging taught workshops
- Provide timely, constructive online feedback to participants
- Support the annual training of Assessors and Mentors
- Assist in the coordination of programme Assessment Boards
- Contribute to the creation of programme learning resources
- Evaluate programme effectiveness by reviewing participant and stakeholder feedback, and use insights to adapt and improve programme’s content and materials
- Ensure the programme maintains high success rates while increasing the number of staff achieving HEA Fellowship, in line with annual targets
- Establish and maintain online peer mentor groups across the ISC network
- Support the delivery of online Fellowship workshops
- Contribute to the development of support materials
- Regularly update and maintain Fellowship content on the APD Hub
- Coordinate monthly internal review meetings with volunteer reviewers
- Review draft Fellowship claims and provide developmental feedback to applicants
- Issue Fellowship vouchers to applicants and maintain accurate records of achievement
- Provide pedagogical guidance and support to academic staff, drawing on a strong understanding of classroom practice, pedagogy and the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023)
- Model effective and inclusive teaching and learning practices in all training and development activities
- Communicate clearly and professionally with staff at all levels, offering guidance and fostering engagement with academic development opportunities
- Promote a culture of teaching excellence across Study Group by actively contributing to the Fellowship Community of Practice Team and other academic development initiatives
- Liaise with Advance HE’s Fellowship team and relevant internal stakeholders, as required
- Engage in continuous personal and professional development, including participation in Advance HE Fellowship and calibration events
ABOUT YOU
- Postgraduate qualification in teaching or equivalent
- Postgraduate degree (preferably in education or a related subject), or working towards
- Fellow or Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
- Teaching and assessing learning in international higher education
- Supporting academic development of staff
- Extensive experience of reviewing HEA Fellowship claims
- Mentoring and/or coaching staff
- Proven track record of teaching excellence
- Effective oral and written communication
- Ability to provide constructive feedback in inclusive and accessible ways
- Excellent knowledge of the Professional Standards Framework 2023 and its practical application in higher education learning and teaching
- Demonstrate a strong interest in international learning and teaching, with upto-date knowledge of emerging trends and pedagogical approaches
- Effectively plan, prioritise and manage workload independently, while meeting tight deadlines.
- Build and sustain professional networks, fostering constructive collaboration across departmental teams and ISC centres
- Proactively identify challenges and offer practical, creative solutions to support continuous improvement of academic development initiative
