JOB OVERVIEW
The Head of STEM will provide the leadership and vision to deliver excellent student outcomes; quality assurance and enhancement that is in keeping with the OES requirements and in line with the Quality Code; and curriculum innovation which embeds strong collaborative working with both the University and the network.
You will be responsible for leading and supporting your academic team. Reporting to the Head of Curriculum and Progression, you will work closely with senior colleagues within and outside of ISC Aberdeen and be accountable for the delivery of contractually required progression rates to the University.
The post-holder will also take responsibility for UFP, IY2 and PMP matters within the programme area.
The successful candidate will have recent successful line academic leadership and management experience in a relevant subject discipline and have proven ability to engage with a HEI in collaborative developments.
ABOUT THE ROLE
- Communicate our vision to drive forward continuous improvement and enable the centre to achieve the aspirational targets for student outcomes.
- Communicate our vision for the development of the academic partnership with the host university, including liaising with STEM departments to ensure effective teaching and learning provisions across all STEM modules and to maximise opportunities for recruitment to the centre.
- Communicate our vision for the development of programme pathways to meet the overall strategic aims of the centre as an effective, attractive and high-quality pathway to UK HE.
- Contribute to planning and development including human resources; academic development; learning, teaching and assessment; and academic quality assurance and enhancement, as part of the Academic Leadership Team.
- If required, work with University colleagues through approved liaison points and report regularly on these through the centre’s deliberative and management structures.
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and identify appropriate actions to solve problems and enhance delivery.
- Identify and deliver appropriate professional development within the STEM team and wider afield, where appropriate
- Lead the performance management process with the STEM team, including Lesson Observations, facilitation of peer observations, setting outcomes and leading their annual performance review
- Provide effective and efficient academic management and co-ordination of staff resources across the STEM team, working closely with the Deputy Director Curriculum & Progression.
- Contribute towards ensuring that the recruitment of STEM staff is planned, timely and compliant.
- Ensure that the STEM team meet key all minimum expectations/compliance in their duties and provide feedback on their performance.
- Participate in regular meetings with the support and STEM teaching staff and represent the Centre at appropriate events and meetings within the Centre, UoA and externally.
- Taking responsibility for academic standards, the quality of learning opportunities, the accuracy and completeness of published information, ensuring that they are managed appropriately and in accordance with the policies and procedures of ISC Aberdeen.
- Oversee the effective operation of the STEM modules and programme review processes, and work on new programme development in collaboration with the Deputy Director Curriculum & Progression.
- Oversee RPAG reporting of STEM team and ensure quality of feedback to students and sponsors when necessary.
- Contribute to ensuring that the Centre is fully compliant with Study Group’s, University of Aberdeen’s and relevant external agencies’ quality frameworks, policies, procedures and codes of practice.
- Contribute to developing and measuring progress against actions in the Centre Action Plan (CAP).
- Contribute to ensuring that the Centre’s Quality Assurance framework is implemented in areas relevant to STEM.
- Contribute to analysing data and feedback from STEM modules and work with the Deputy Director Curriculum & Progression to monitor progress towards progression targets, planning and implementing remedial actions where necessary.
- Contribute to reports, analysis and evaluation for all internal and external scrutiny processes as directed by the Centre Director and in collaboration with the Deputy Director Curriculum & Progression.
- Work closely with the Deputy Director Curriculum & Progression, Deputy Director Student Experience and the SE office to ensure that timetables and assessment schedules are delivered effectively, staff are recruited compliantly, and SE and Academic staff work together as one team.
- Monitor the annual leave process, ensuring that cover is available, and the Unit 4 system is updated.
- Contribute to the teaching and delivery of the STEM curriculum effectively and efficiently.
- Work closely with the Deputy Director Curriculum & Progression to ensure that appropriate, current and relevant subject, academic skills and language development are integrated and embedded in the programme, aligned with the partnership articulation.
- Contribute to the delivery and assessment of provision.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of the virtual learning environment (VLE), relating to STEM provision.
- Support a cost-conscious working environment, at the same time as delivering a quality service and experience to students.
- Contribute to ensuring that the Centre is compliant in relation to Safeguarding responsibilities and staff across the Centre are aware of their obligations/requirements.
- Build relationships within the organisation and beyond to offices, agents, and sponsors
- Develop close and effective working relations with key partners within the University of Aberdeen, including Department and Faculty Link Tutors including the organisation of immersion activities and module alignment with the UoA programmes.
